RAILWAY MANAGER.

MR. HILEY'S CAREER. COMPARATIVE FIGURES. London, April 10. The North-Eastern railway, with which Mr. Hiley has been connected during the greater part of his railway career, appears on paper to be a smaller concern than the New Zealand system, for the length of the line is only 1734 miles, but there is so much double and quadruple track in England, and such large sidings that, in reality, it is a great deal larger. The New Zealand system is 2800 miles. The track of the North-Eastern amounts to 4842 miles, besides which the company has working rights over 270 mile* of foreign lines.

Here are a few comparative figures:— New New Zealand Eastern Locomotives . ' 493 2,000 Carnages ..' 1,212' 4,724 floods waggons .. 18,521 • 120,000 Train mileage ... 8,141,000 27,750,000 Tassengers carried 11,200,000 00,213,000 Receipts ......... 3,67<i,0Q0 10,702,000 Expenditure 2,466,000 6,887,000 The North-Eastern is one of the great En lish companies which have an important through traffic to the Continent, and it was in the organisation of this traffic through the port of Hull, in competition with another railway, that Mr Hiley made his reputation. ■ ' ' For a high position in the railway world Mr. Hiley possesses not a few valuable qualifications. His education at a first-claos British, public school has been followed by a particularly varied and useful practical experience' in railwa-• working, with both passenger and goods deportments, while at Hull b c acquired considerable insight into the prompt and proner handling of the vast oversea traffic dealt with at the premier port on the Huniber.

A former collea«iio of Mr. Hilpv's .it King's the terminus of the Oreat Northern Hallway system, says- '-He is n good disciplinarian. He Ims „ ro ved Himself a-stronjr man wherever he has gone and he will make his ma] .,. , .. ever lie goes."
