A PRISON ESCAPEE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A man named Daniel South escaped from custody at the Auckland police station cells this morning. South is a single man, aged 33 years, who was arrested in Wellesley street last night about !) o'clock, on a charge of being disorderly while drunk. He gave a good deal of trouble while being arrested, and further charges of assaulting Constables Millar and Hill, and resisting a constable in the execution of his duty, were preferred against him. This morning, about 7 o'clock, when tho prisoners were receiving some attention, South appears to have taken advantage ot a momentary opportunity when the door of the cell yard was unguarded to sup away quietly and escape.

ANOTHER MUNICIPAL RECOUNT. Christchurch, Last Night. Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., granted the prayer of the petition of ten electors of the Linwood ward for a recount of votes cast for candidates for the City Council at the recent municipal elections, and ordered that it be conducted under the same conditions as govern an official recount in a general election. The recount will take place to-morrow. _____ CASE OF FRAUD. Hamilton, Last Night. Arthur James McKibbin, who was adjudicated a bankrupt in December'last, and who is at present - serving nine months for false pretences in Auckland, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labor at Hamilton today, for five offences under the penal i clauses of the Bankruptcy Act. The evi- 1 dence showed that McKibbin, who was formerly a land agent at Hamilton, pur- J chased several lots of cattle under an assumed name from one firm of auctioneers and sold them through another , firm under his own name. THE SOUTHERN BAND CONTEST. Invercargill, Last Night. The band contest committee decided last night to recommend Percv Jones, conductor of the Geelong Municipal Band, for appointment by the South Island Bands Association as adjudicator at the Invercargill band contest. GISBOBNE'S ENGINEER. Gisbornn. Last Night. At the Borough Council last night, Cr. Wade's motion that the engineer's services be dispensed with was carried by j six votes to four.
