THE DAY OF REST.

A PROTECTIVE ALLIANCE BEING FORMED. Auckland, May 23. Steps are now being taken to form branches throughout the Dominion of an alliance that has for its object the promotion of a better religious observance of the Lord's Day, and its protection as a day of rest for the whole community. The alliance aims at counteracting the widespread influence of "the greed of gain and the pursuit of pleasure" that threatens observance of the Sabbath, and emphasises the need of some definite measures which will meet the peril. An Auckland branch was formed yesterday at a meeting held in the Diocesan Office, representative of the various churches. A letter was received from Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, stating that he sympathised with the movement, and would cooperate with it in certain directions. Dr. Crossley, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, was appointed president of the brand), the 'Moderator of the Presbyterian and chairman of the district committee of the Methodist Church were elected vice-presidents, and the Rev. A. Miller was appointed secretary and treasurer. The executive includes representatives of all the Christian churches in the city. Membership is open to all who promise to (a) attend divine worship on the Lord's Day, unless prevented by unavoidable circumstances; (b) to discountenance, as far as may be within their power, airv such use, of the Lord's Day as may conflict with its proper observance as one oE rest and worship; (c) to do their utmost to create a healthier public opinion and conscience on this subject.
