Mr. J. C. Patrick, Collector of Customs at Patea, has received notice of his transfer to Napier. Mr. A. M. Carr, a well-known Stratford livery stables proprietor, who has disposed of his business, and is going on the land, was a passenger by the Rarawa for Auckland last night. Probate has been granted of the will of the late John Fagan, grazier, of bunny Ridge, Dandurawa, New South Wales, who died in September last. The value has been sworn at £257,070, and the duty paid amounted) to £26,032. Mr. Graham, Minister for Lands in V ictona, has announced his intention of retiring from politics at the end of the present Parliament, in about 18 months' time. Mr. Graham, who is 73 years of age, has been a member of Parliament for over 30 years.

Mr. John Charles Manchee, president of the Warrigal Club, one of the oldest and most successful graziers of New South Wales, died last week. He was. born near Bristol, England, in 1832, and received his education at Darmstadt. Germany. He arrived in Melbourne in 1852, and, after visiting the Bendigp. goldfields, came on to New South Wales. The death is announced of Mrs. Charlotte Slack, relict of the late Mr. W. IL Slack, of Awapuni. The deceased lady,, who had reached the age of 73 years, arrived in New Zealand in 1859 by the Clomarf. She took up her residence in Peel Forest and was subsequently married to Mr. Slack at Woodside, Canter* bury. She leaves three sons and five daughters (surviving).

I Mrs. H. Cole, of Christchurch, a very prominent worker in the temperancecause, whose death was reported yesterj day, was born in Staffordshire, her [ parents being members of the Primitive Methodist Church. She was one of the original members of the Women's Christion Temperance Union when that organisation was founded in New Zealand in 1886 by Mrs. Leavitt. In 1904 Mrs. Cole was elected president of the Christchurch branch of the union, and held" that office until her health failed her at the end of last year. She was elected Dominion president of the union seven years ago, and re-elected every year since. Under Mrs. Cole's presidency the union m New Zealand made good progress, the roll of financial members at present comprising 3144 Europeans and" over 600 Maoris. Mrs. Cole represented" the New Zealand Women's Christian Temperance Union at the AustralasianConference in 1911, and was chosen to represent the Dominion Union at the world's biennial conference to be held at Brooklyn, New York, in October of tins year. Mrs. Cole, who was married to Mr. 11. Cole in 1884, leaves two unmarried daughters.
