STRATFORD NEWS.

I FROM OUR RESIDENT REPORTER. Office and Job Printing Works: Next N.Z. Loan & Mercantile Agency Co., Broadway. Telephone No. 113.

Ij OUT WHANGA' W^Y Three or f "-v ■ ;«tl to be necessary for the ytri'.tiord-Whangainoinoiiii return trip. Nowadays a few hours is sullicient. Recently, Mr. H. Gollop did the return trip in six hours and a half, with a load of passengers each waj. He had the honor of having taken the latest car of the season to Whanga'. He took three passengers out in his Austin car. yesterday in under three liours, and, despite slippery patches on the Whangasaddle, covered the return trip in a shade over that time. The unmetalled road ■was found in very good order for the time of the year, only the sunless spots on the Whanga' side of the saddle proving difficult of negotiation. The metalled road for a few miles out from Stratford has not improved—rather the contrary—in the last six months. Inspector Hill and his staff reckon on having the railway bridge over the Whangamomona stream in the township completed in three weeks' time, and expect that the Public Works engine will be in the railway yard in about that time. This bridge is one of 81 feet span, and is i of great strength. An excellent foundation was secured for the big concrete piers on solid blue papa, without going below the bed of the stream. The Tahora tunnel has been pierced some three weeks now. The laborers are now engaged in widening out the tunnel j to admit of the concrete lining blocks. .' These will be made near the tunnel mouth, and very shortly the ballast trains will be running in the Mount Egmont .gravel to' the. big. bin „(estimated capacity, 2000 to 3000 yards)', preparatory to.commeneing block making. Very little work has been done beyond the Tahora saddle. The Public Works engine and trains stop very little short of the Whangamomona township now. As for the townships en route, truly it can be said that "their glory hath departed."

STRAY PARAGRAPHS The young man Ounderson, who had his skull fractured in an accident at the York road creamery recentl;,, is well on the way to recovery. The "men digging and delving in that tunnel in Broadway central are reported to he looking for the best value in men's underwear and clothing generally. No need to look.
