AN AUCKLAND SENSATION.
A FORTUNE-TELLER MAKES . TROUBLE. THE STORY OF A BROKEN HOME. Auckland, May 16. Behind the quarrel and the shooting at the house of Edward Williams, of Newmarket, last night, lies a. story of jealousy, aroused by a visit to a fortuneteller. In the story, as related this morning by a Mrs. Williams —a woman of homely and respectable appearance—is introduced some pathetic circumstances: — "Some time ago," said Mrs. Williams, "my husband had his fortune told by a woman in the city. When he returned home on that occasion he said that the fortune-teller stated that his wife was unfaithful to him, and ever since he had been throwing up that insinuation. He has been drinking a good deal of late, and when he came home at 0 o'clock yesterday evening he was the worse for liquor. He went out again, and returned at .about 8.30, when he again brought up the matter that the fortune-teller had said. I then told him," continued the wife, "that if lie repeated the statement I would knock him down. He came at me with a revolver in his hand, and I made a blow at him. Then he turned away to the other side of the bedroom, and, placing the revolver to his head, fire\(j. I took-the weapon away, arid, got him to bed, while I sent for the police. My husband has previously threatened to do away with himself when under the influence of drink." Sergeant Dale, who reached the house at about 8.45 p.m., found Williams in bed partly-dressed, with a good deal of blood about him. There was a small wound omthe right side of his head, but tire'bleeding had ceased. Mrs Williams •was ■ attending the injured man, and a sdven-cliambered revolver (loaded in six ' chambers) • lay. on the dressing table. Dr. Kinder was'summoned, and Williams was' rkftioved to the hospital, being left there under ■tthe i supervision of a constable.-' '?There is little doubt," said Sorgeamt Dale, "that Williams' rash act was Caused by drink.
