STiiATFQRD A. & P. ASSOCIATION

FROM OUR RESIDENT REPORTER,

Telephone No. 113,

I TI.IE GENERAL COMMITTEE. I The general committee of the A. & I'. Association met at the secretary's office on Saturday afternoon. The president, Mr. .J. I), llealy, presided. Those present iiit-luded Mr. J. li. Ilinc, M.P., and j the following committee: Messrs. A. C. | S Walsh, J. Shotter, Campbell, Jackson, ' jj W. V. Harkness, T. Walker, J. Chris- I

| toil'el, jun., A. Stewart, E. Brocklebank J. J!. Richards, K. McK. Morisou, R. Mas ters, G. Sangster, R. Dingle, K. T. B Mellow, W. 11. Were, D. J. Masters, B Orr. The report of the Executive Committee to the General Committee was as follows: —The Executive Committee has pleasure in reporting on the work of the past three months as follows: The Executive Committee has met ten times, and the Advertising Committee three times during the period. The Gymkhana which was held on Easter Monday was a great success, resulted in a profit of £l2O for the Association, which must be considered highly satisfactory. The dairy farm competition has been judged, and re- • suited in Mr. A. D. Walker, of Xgaerc, gaining first place, and Mr. T. Webb second. In connection with this competition the judges complimented the As-, sociation on the excellent work it is doing in the district by running such a competition. The Grounds Committee has had some, of .tho-earth at the corner of "Flint road'removed and spread over the grounds, and the committee is arranging a working bee of members who : are willing-to' assist in the removing of more of the bank. In connection with the recommendations from the last annual meeting,'-the committee have to report as follows: The train has been

slopped at times to allow of football teams'alighting; but if it were stopped on show days, the space for passengers to alight oh would be too narrow, and would congest the traffic to the great danger of \all passengers. This being so, j the Association have approached the Railway Department, for the estimate of the cost of a siding at the Flint road," to allow lis to disembark both passengers] and stock. The Department's estimate | of the cost of same is £SOO, plus the cost of earthwork, and the executive cannot see its way clear to proceed further with the matter at present.—The cost of painting, the cattle and sheep 'pens would be approximately £OO, and the committee cannot sec its way clear to s!)pnd this sum. The deterioration of the timber now will not be any more than iif .it -were painted, except at the places where' joints inre made, and it would be ! too costly to remedy it now. | _ The executive wish to draw thfi atten--1 tion of the committee to the necessity

of actively canvassing for new members, some of whom you will be called upon to elect to-day. The executive being of the opinion that this association should he represented at the Conference of A. & P. Associations, and have affiliated with , the Metropolitan Board and appointed Messrs.--Dingle and J. B. Hine as delegates to attend. A northern A. & P. Association has intimated a scheme whereby each member donated a weaner calf to -the Association, and the sale of 1 these weaners realised some £3OO, and the executive have hopes of establishing the scheme here. Already some ten weaners have been promised, and the committee will be glad of the name of anyone else -who is willing to donate. A standing advertisement board has been erected on the grounds, near the railway line, advertising the show dates on one side and the Gymkhana on the other. The grounds are in excellent order, and have been leased to Mr. T. D. Colson again at the same rental as last year. In moving the adoption of the report, the president said that in bis opinion the siding at the grounds was too big a project for the Association to touch just yet. The adoption was seconded by Mr, W. P. Kirkwood, and carried. Dr. Carbery was elected a life member, and fourteen ordinary members were elected. Messrs. J. B. Richards, C. Jackson, K Jackson, J. Linn. .T. Rhotter, B. Orr, J. T. Belcher, W. V. ITarkness, W. H. 11. Young and R. Dingle, with power to add, were elected a committee to canvass for gifts of weaners to the Association. It was pointed out that the Association, which was founded in the interests of the farmers and the farming community, was being very liberally supported by townspeople, whoso donations, membership fees and special prizes were considerable. Farmers were not easy to get cash out of, but they would all doubtless be willing to give ft weaner calf to help the Association. Mr. J. B. Richards spoke on the topic of the dairy farm competition, saying that one of the many good effects of it had been to make known the productivity of our soil. He suggested that the farmers in the different districts might provide special prizes to be awarded to the farms scoring tbe highest points in the respective districts, over and above the Association's prizes. Mr. Dingle said he would make no apology for again urging members to aim to secure a thousand members before next show, pointing out that many meri merely wanted canvassing. A little effort on the part of each individual member would soon bring the total up to a thousand, and then, of course, they could go on for the next thousand. , ACCIDENT .Mr. James Frederic, while motoring round the Broadvvay-Fcnton street corner | early on Saturday morning, struck a frosty patch, and in a twinkling the car was upside down, with the occupants pinned below it. Mr. Fredric sustained a sprained wrist, and the two men with 1 him were bruised and cut a little. But all had a miraculous escape from death, ; The top hamper of the ear was badly smashed. Miss Edmonds, representing Messrs. Nestles, Ltd., lias arranged with their local agents. Messrs. Masters and .Son, to give a demonstration on Mondav. Tuesday and Wednesday next, at their store of makinsr coffee and cocoa from th latest scientific preparations of that well-known firm. These demonstrations are being held in different parts of the Dominion, and wherever held have been largely attended by .the public. Messrs. Masters and Son specially invite the ladies to attend and witness and sample | the beverages as made by Miss Edmonds. Mr. S. Sharp, who managed Mr. C. E. James' liairdressing and shaving saloon throughout the whole of its successful career, has bought the business and moved the whole of the up-to-date fittings of the saloon to convenient premises almost immediately opposite, where he .will be pleased to welcome old customers and new. Complete fresh stock of smokers' sundries.* A tremendous drop in tbe temperature has brought about a big advance in tbe demand for warm wear for men.
