J The Otago Harbor Board's salvage tug, at the construction of which progress is being made at Port Chalmers, "will be easily the best vessel of her kind south iof the line. Something about the extent of her enormous pumping capacity was demonstrated when one of her pumps recently sucked all the water out of the stranded steamer Kowliai in an incredibly short space of time. A powerful searchlight, to be utilised for descrying distant objects at night time, will be a i feature of the modern equipment of the | steamer, which is likely to be out of the I builders' hands liy the end of this year. ! Most of the hull plates are now in posi- | tion, and the nice modelling of the hull jis now apparent, Her modelling is the ! subject of very favorable comment by (the people who go to see the iron ship being built. | The price paid for the steamer Gifford, I now named the Waitomo, which, was re- ) cently purchased by the Union Company, j is reported to be £57,000.
