BOXING.
THE HAWERA TOURNAMENT. Tlie Boxing tournament at llawcra on race nights was largely attended, anil some good bouts were witnessed.' Tlie special matches on the second night created great interest. Especially was this' the case in 'the special match for middle weights, in which Tavlor (Wanganui) met Willett (New Plymouth) The boxing was capital, Taylor especially giving a display of straight hittin" and scientific work that would take a lot of beating. His straight left was a treat to watell. Willett, though not so finished a boxer, was very solid, was in better form, and showed abilitv to take punishment as well as to give it. His victory was a popular one. The star match of the eveniii" was, of course, tlie match between °oliver (New Plymouth) and Hurrell (llawcra). A better contested match would be hard to see. Jn the first round both boys were manoeuvring to trv one another's skill; in the second 'and third rounds Hurrell had somewhat the better of the deal; in the fourth and fifth Oliver began 10 warm up and scored well; and in the last the going was verv stroii" and neither could be said to outshine the other. Hurrell won the match, but there was not 11 great deal between them. In the light weights, H. I'himb (Xew Plymouth), defeated W. Coombes (Awa'tunaj on points at the end of six rounds. A Clarry (Eltham) won from V. West (llawcra) who was disqualified in the second round lor hitting low. The novice light weights brought out six competitors. Finnerty defeated Balsam in, the semi-final, and also lasted Inn" enough in the final to secure the verdict from Coombes.
In the novice bantam weights W. New (Hawera) defeated ,1. Wing Kee (Jlidhirst), after an exciting three rounds, and lliggs won the final' from .New. in the novice middle weights. T. Syiiio (Wanganui). took the count from' L. Wjlls (ilawcra) in the first round. Wills also knocked out Hall (Oliakune), in the first round of the final In the novice heavy-weight, W. Sailor Tom Sharkey, the once great American heavy-weight, does not tliink much of some boxers of to-day:—"l've seen 'em all— I'alzer. Mct'arty,'Wilhml, Keanis, and tho others," said the burly sailor, with a tired expression on his classic features, "and there ain't one of them worth a silver quarter. These big guys nowadays don't know how to light. They just stand up and maul each other, getting the dough as easy as they can. Jeffries may have' been a dead one when Johnson' beat him, but when he was right—like the time he fought me at Coney Maud—nobody could have whipped him. Old Bob Kitsisimmons could' have stopped all these here white hopes in the same ring in the same night, and the same goes for me. I'd have, eaten 'em up in one bisr gulp." " STOMACH TROUBLES. Laxe-Tonic Pills are a most effective remedy for Biliousnesn and all irregularities of the stomach and bowels. They act quickly and effectually, without weakening the system as 'is the case with most medicines used for these frillies. Trice. and Is Cd. Obtainable everywhere.
