THE TIMARU TROUBLE. IMPORTING BUTCHERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. ■Gisborne, Friday. About twenty butchers who have been engaged at the local freezing works, as the season is now closing, have proceeded to Canterbury this week to take up work at Pareora. Timaru, Last Night. The Kai Ora is loading mutton and tallow for London, and is being worked this morning by fifty free labourers. The latter held' a meeting at noon, and formally formed a Seaside Workers' Union, to'be registered under the Arbitration Act. l't is also stated that a big movement is afoot to form a registered union of slnnulitevmen. who took the place of the slaughtermen on strike at Pareora and Smithfield, in sympathy with'whom the Timaru watersiders are on strike. It is not known what the latter are doing. They held a number of meetings this morning, at which Mr. Webb, president of the Federation of Labour is present. A NEW UNION FORMED. Timaru, Last Night. The s.s. Kia.Ora arrived this morning to load 30,000 'carcases and other freezer goods. At the time of starting work the unionists were at a meeting with Mr. T. C. Webb. The agents did not wait for them, but formed all the gangs required from free labor. The free men employed held a meeting at noon and resolved to form a separate union and register. They are working men, no farmers being engaged to-day. DISTRIBUTION OF LABOR. Wellington, Last Night. Arrangements are being made by the Labor Department to send a large number of unemployed to various public works in both isiands. The majority of those required must have a knowledge of road, railway or tunnel work. About 150 men are required, and 40 of these will go from Wellington to the road and railway works at Stratford. The Auckland oflice of the Labor Department will send a number of ■men to Tauranga, and other railways works in the district, from Chrislchurch to the West Coast. Men will be sent to Otira, and from Dunedin others will be sent to (he railway works at Roxborough and ill,' irrigation works at Mount Ida.
