SNOW IN THE SOUTH.
POSITION VERY SERIOUS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, Last night. There has been a very heavy fall of snow in the back country, and, though no losses of stock have yet been reported, the position looks very serious for some of the settlers, many of whom only took up their runs last year. BetAveen Masopotamia and Mount Aljadus, snow lies to a depth of three feet, and at Devilshell, Lake, Heron, and Hakatere the settlers are much concerned for the safety of their stock.
On some runs the sheep had been brought down from the hills before the heavy snow storm, but in some cases the sheep are still upon high country, where they have been exposed to most severe conditions.
The settlers are advertising for snowrakers. It is too soon yet for sheen owners to say how far they have suffered, but, if rigorous conditions continue for any length of time, some will have a sorry story to tell.
