EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council was held at Opunake on Friday, when there were present: Crs. W. C. Dudley (chairman), E. Maxwell, S. Campbell, C, 11. Hirst, W. Farquliar, J. Burgess, ¥. J. Davey, T. Harvey, and P. YVillcox. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr. C. A'Court Opie) reported that the work done throughouc the Rahotu riding consisted of cleaning out water tables and general laincLiiaiice work, also cleaning up of ~'ridge approaches and repairs to handlailing or approaches. About fifteen yards of metal at 3s (id per yard would be required to place the junction of the Kina and Main South Roads in good .order. In the Rahotu, Southern and Opunake riding, J. Hickey had completed his metal contract on the' Eltham Road, and Scanlon Bros, had also completed their contract on the Main South Road. The permanent hands weiie now able to attend to general maintenance work. He also reported at length on work in the Oeo, Northern, and Southern ridings. The grader had arrived, and had been put together. About two days' work had been done on the Main Road north and so members would be able to form their own idea of its working capacity. GOVERNMENT GRANTS. The Public Works Department forwarded the usual circular, asking the Council to submit grants likely to be required during the coming year. It was resolved to ask for £IOOO on the Wiremu Road, between the Te Kiri and Ihaia Roads; £IOOO between Ihaia and Ngariki; £ISOO for the Okahu Road between the Ngariki and Newall Roads, and £750 for bridges on the OpunakeStratford Road. GENERAL. Mr. W. C. Dudley was granted a renewal of his slaughterhouse license. Momona (Rahotu) and Wi Kupi (Pungarehu) were granted renewals of their licenses, subject to attention to certain details. The riding accounts were as follows: Oeo debit £57!) 12s Id; Rahotu (northern) debt, £1,153 10s Id, (southern) debit £1314 7s-Id; Opunake . (credit) £55 13s 4d. The total overdraft was £3009 15s lid. Messrs. Green and Tyrell claimed £l2 compensation for a heifer which broke its neck by falling in a drain overgrown with fern. The Engineer reported that he had inspected the drain, which, though overgrown with fern at its outlet, was in no degree dangerous to travelling stock under ordinary circumstances. It was in close proximity to Messrs. Green and Tyrell's gateway, and whilst herding cattle througli the , gateway, a heifer may have been forced into the drain, but under ordinary circumstances the \lrain was far safeithan many along the road. The Council resolved to accept no liability in the matter. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand notified that the Council could draw up to £7OOO. If it was necessary the bank would be prepared to consider an application for an overdraft of £8237. The Receiver of Land Revenue notified payment of £,12 18s 4d on account of thirds accrued, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands notified approval of proposed expenditure of same.' It was resolved to inform proprietors of the traction engines, which are in use along the main South Road, that unless satisfactory arrangements are made in connection with the amount due to the Council, on the basis agreed upon, steps will be taken to enforce the same. The Warea Dairy Company were granted permission to close the ford at the \Vaiweranui bridge during repairs to the Company's dam, provided that a light is hung at each end during the night. Accounts amounting to £SBO lis were passed for payment.
