Dr. A. Ramage, late of Waitara, has commenced practice at Brooklyn. Mr. James Hall, 8.A., senior mathematical and science master in Palmerston North High School has been appointed a senior master in Wellington College.

Mr. George Lipsev, of Lipsey Park. Te Aroha, aged 07 years, died on Monday night. Deceased was the pioneer settler of Te Aroha, and owned considerable property.

Dr. Truby King, of Dunedin, accompanied by Mrs. King will leave Wellington on Friday for London, where he will represent New Zealand at a health conference.

The Dunedin "Star" says that Mr. John Duthic, ex-member for Wellington City will be included among the calls to the Legislative Council about to be made by tbe Massey Administration.

In the Manawatu district it is reported that Mr. David Buick will not seek re-election at the close of the present Parliament, and that Mr. J. A. Nash (the present Mayor) will be the Ministerial candidate for the Palmerston seat.

Mrs. Harrison, widow of Dr. Harrison, left Eltham on Monday morning en route for England via Wellington. She expects to leave Wellington on the 14th. and. will be accompanied by her two sons. A number of friends were at the Eltham railway station to bid her goodbye. 6

The Rev. Canon Hough, of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, who died last week, was for more than a quarter of a century rector of St. Jude's, Randwick. He was in his 70th year. About a fortnight before his death he received a paralytic stroke, from which he never rallied.

Mr. A. G. Longworth, of Foxton, has; been appointed an instructor in thePhysical Education Department, in place of Mr. A. Davis, who recently found it necessary to resign in order to proceed to England on private business. Mr. Longworth arrived in the Dominion about eighteen months ago from England, where he received his training a& an instructor.

The retirement of Sir Charles Hotham, the senior Admiral of the Fleet, on reaching the age limit of seventy years, took place at the end of March. The admiral's rest is well earned, for he ha» served the State for no less than fiftyseven years. He entered the navy in IBOC, and first saw active service in the Aew Zealand war, being one of the officers of the party which attacked the rebel redoubt at Rangariri, in 1863. Father 'Bierne, who.'for some timepast has been stationed in New Plymouth and who has just been- appointed to the charge of the Inglewood Parish was presented by the congregation of bt. Joseph's Church with a purse ot sovereigns on Sunday night and witfc a case of pipes and tobacco pouch by the Hibernians. Both presentationswere made by Mr. W. T. Jennings and feelingly acknowledged by the recipient. '

Miss Ada Butler, of New Plymouth, arrived in London early last month and intends to stay until the end of June, spending Easter at Heme Bay, then going across to Ostend for a few days before visiting Scotland and Ireland (says the Wellington "Times" , • correspondent). She will spend May * on the Continent, going to Norway early m June, and returning to London for a few days before leaving for New 't York and Canada en route for New Zealand. .

General Godley hopes to .sail by the Aorangi, via San Francisco, on June •' 10th if he has been able before then to transact with the Hon. James Allen all the business that will be necessary on the return of the latter from England. The death occurred yesterday at theXow Plymouth Hospital of Mr. FrancisReginald Thompson, youngest son of Sirs. 11. A. Thompson, of St. Aubym street. The deceased, who Avas only 21 years ■of age, had only recently removed! to Gisborne, where he contracted fever. He was of the brightest disposition, very popular, and altogether a very promising young man. He was an enthusiastic footballer, and last year shaped very well, as wing-forward in the Rovers fifteen. Much sympathy is felt for his mother in the untimely death of a good son. . ,

News was received by cablegram ore Friday last: of the. death in New York of Mr. Arthur Temple Firth, of Auckland. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. J. t C.;'Firth, the original owner of the Mntamata Estate, and a vWy old' Auckland resident. The deceased' left Auckland in 1911, and at the time of his death was conducting business in connection with the Voltite Company, of Auckland. Mr. Firth was very well known in mining circles in Auckland. The deceased has three brothers in Auckland—Messrs. E. C, W. T„ and B C. Firth.
