CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
CONFERENCE OF DELEGATES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. A conference of delegates representing societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals was held to-day. Only five delegates attended. Regarding the proposed Bill for the better prevention of cruelty, resolutions were passed urging that the stunning by means of a 7-lb hammer for slaughtering purposes be the method endorsed by the conference, that a request be made to standardise slaughterhouses in the country so that cattle about to be slaughtered would be firmly held, and that clauses be included in the 13111 prohibiting enclosed coursing matches, live shooting matches, and insisting on visits to rabbit traps by trappers at certain intervals. Wellington, Last Night. The S.P.C.A. Conference has decided to call the attention of local bodies to the need for better supervision of drivers of drays, and that every dray Bhould have a separate driver. A motion was passed urging the suppression of the use of pea rifles by the youth of the Dominion. It was also decided ''That it is desirable that paid drivers and owners of vehicles used for trade be licensed, and that steps be taken to have legislation passed to enable local authorities to make by-laws to provide for the same. The need for better facilities for the transit of stoek by sea and rail was discussed, but no recommendation was arrived at.
