The' Council meeting was stormy. The Mariinovitch Party exercised warlike ardor jn an effort to gain the upprr hand. When the discussion was at ir.s height, .King Nicholas, having conquered his own. feelings, entered the Chamber to confront the Ministerial tempest. He said: '•The supreme interests of the country demand that we bow Our heads before the.will of Europe." He pointed out the.utter folly of war, and said that it would, add another page to Montenegrin history, but it would be the last. "I do nut. wish," he said, "to close your history .tons'."
General ..Martinovitch made a violent speech. Be said that after himself successfully storming Tarabosch he felt justified in levelling the bitterest reproaches on those who humbled Montenegro. He tendered the Ministry's resignation.
King Nidholas telegraphed to Sir E. rljrey that Montenegro's attitude over ; Scutari was inspired by the eternal principles of justice, sanctified by the history ,qI conquest. .dignity," he said, "and .that of the people does not allow us to ..submit to isolated, orders. We therefore ..place the destiny of Scutari in the hands *#f-,.£he Power*."
