THE PUNCHBOWL MYSTERY.

A YOUNG GIRL'S DEATH. ALLEGED TO BE ACCIDENTAL. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, April 26. The inquest was resumed to-day on the body of itlie girl Porter, which was found near the Punchbowl station on March 5. The body was covered with scrub and the head was battered in. It was supposed that she had been decoyed into the l>ush and nobbed. There appeared to be evidences iof a desperate struggle. Although a reward was offered no trace of the supposed murdered could be found. To-day a possible new solution of the > mystery was disclosed. The evidence showed that the deceased girl was friendly with a baker named Chard, and occasionally went for rides in his cart. Detectives submitted a report that there was a growing conviction amongst the police that it was not ,a case of murder, and suggested that Porter was riding with Chard and was bumped off the cart and struck her head on a stump in falling. Medical evidence showed that the wounds were compatible with the theory. The inquest was not finished. Chard was bound over in his own recognisance to appear when called on.
