BROTHERHOOD BROTHERHOOD BROTHERHOOD BROTHERHOOD RE-OPENS RE-OPENS' RE-OPENS RE-OPENS NEXT SUNDAY. NEXT SUNDAY. NEXT SUNDAY. NEXT SUNDAY. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE BOROUGH OF XEW PLYMOUTH. , JX T response to a large and numerouslysigned requisition. I have allowed myself to be again nominated for the ; office of Mayor of Xew Plymouth. In soliciting the suffrages of the electors of Xew Plymouth. I am content to allow my past services in the Council, and the last two years as Mayor of your town, ,to speak for themselves. As Chief Magistrate, I feel I can take some share of the credit for the Greater New Plymouth and Tramway Schemes so recently carried. I have also consented to nomination as a member of the New Plymouth Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, , believing, as I do, that with its large i annual contribution of over £7OO and its further liability of capital account of £4OOO towards the Hospital rebuilding scheme, the New Plymouth Borough should be directly represented on the Board. If the burgesses do me the honor of again electing me, I shall do all in my power to further the progress and prosperity of Greater Xew Plymouth. 5 Yours faithfully, ( G. W. BROWNE. MAYORAL ELECTIONS. quest of a large number of electors, a-nd in response to a numerously-signed requisition, and also to a generally expressed feeling .that a change in the Mayoral chair is desirable, I have allowed myself to be nominated for the office of Mayor. As always, I am in favor of municipal enterprise being exhibited in greater measure than in the past, in the direction of bringing and keeping our town up' to date in cleanliness, comfort, attractiveness and public works of general ! utility. As I stated last year", Xew Plymouth has now the opportunity of laying the foundations of a city that will stand with slight modifications in the changing conditions of time. With the great majority of ratepayers, I have been an advocate of electric trams, and there should now be no delay in furthering this matter, and steps sshould at once be taken to raise the loan at the lowest possible price. Now that the Edison Storage Battery tramcars are in operation in Gisborne, I am firmly of the opinion that immediate steps should be taken to' thoroughly inspect that installation before any contract is let for an overhead system. Should it "be found that the storage car wjll be satisfactory for use here, the great saving in cost is a factor that tlije ratepayers should be asked to adjudicate on. I consider that the time is ripe for the taking of a poll on Raiting on Unimproved Values. This is an equitable method of taxation that is last gaining in public favor. The revision of the Borough Bv-laws. and particularly with reference to the control of motor-car and motor-cycle traffic, is urgently needed. I am in favor of a universal Saturday half-holiday, and steps should be taken to bring the contiguous towns into harmony on this question. The qxiestion of instituting a more definite and permanent system of roading is one of the great needs of the town. A considerable amount of money is about to he spent in street construction and improvement, and I hope to see the latest improvements in permanent road construction adopted. The steady prosecution of sewerage extension, electric lighting, and. wherever possible, town beautification. are important matters that should claim a maximum of attention. In conclusion, I consider Ihat the finances of the borought want thorough investigation, as the amount of the overdraft at the present high rate of interest is too high. If you do me the high honor of electing me, I shall do all in my power for the prosperity and advancement of New Plymouth. lam not a member of any other board, and as the various interests of public bodies may clash. 1 do not consider it desirable that the Mayor of the borough should be a member of several other boards. Y r ours faithfully. J. S. MEDLEY. Egmoirt St., New Plymouth, P H A N K ]\/[ESSENGER, F.X.Z.LA., ARCHITECT, Devon Street, NEW PLYMOUTH.
