OUR DREADNOUGHT

THE WOMEN'S GIFTS.

A MAORI VISIT.

Per Press Association,

Wellington, Last .Night.

When the Imperial Government accepted New Zealand's offer of a battleship thq Women's Patriotic League organised a subscription for the purpose of maV.ng a gift to the vessel. After consulting Captain Ilalsey, the League's committee has decided that the presentation shall take the form of a pair of silver kettle-drums. Captain Halsey said that the League could give nothing that would be more appreciated than the drums, which would be used on all occasions, and in the hour of battle would stir the heart of each member of the crew. The High Commissioner is to select the drums in London, have them suitably inscribed and presented when the vessel returns from the world's cruise. This afternoon large crowds visited the warship. Up to Sunday evening 80,000 people had inspected the cruiser, Sunday's total being 1!),000. A number of prominent members of the Maori race went out to If.M.S. JJew Zealand this morning, and welcomed Captain Halsey and his men in picturesque speeches. They also presented several robes and a Tangiwai pendant to Captain Halsey, who, after returning thanks, entertained the natives and presented them with mementoes of tha ship. Among the Maoris were Mr. C. R. Parata, Major Tunuirangi (of Wairarapa, who commanded the Maori contingent at Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations), Te Hen Hcu Tu> kino (Taupo), and Hcni Terei (chieftainess of the Xgatiraukawa tribe).
