STRATFORD NEWS.

FROM OUR RESIDENT REPORTER,

Telephone No. 113,

STRATFORD GOLF CLUB AWTAL MEETING. The president, Mr. A. W. Budge, presided over the annual meeting of the Stratford Coif Cluh on Friday evening. There was a fair attendance of members. The secretary, Mr. 8. Spence, submitted the report and blanee-sheet. In moving their adoption the president said the report was of a most satisfactory nature. The balance-sheet was even more satisfactory, the receipts including £lll 15s from members' sub-

scriptions and arrears, £l3 os from competitors, and totalling over £132. The

expenditure was fairly heavy, including over £22 in plant and £lO rent. The 1911 season started with a debit of £l3 8s Id. The men's subscriptions in that year were £.54 (£7O this year), and ladies' subscriptions £9 (£'24' 10s). There was expended in labor fln the previous year £ls 19s, but in the year just closed this had cost £55 3s fld. From being £l3 8s Id in arrears, the club drifted in the previous year into the position of having a debit of £33, ISs lid. Now tlie assets showed a margin of £O4 5s Sd over liabilities, and the president mentioned that the. assets had been written down to the very lowest. He added that members understood thor-

onglily to whom this satisfactory posi

tion was due—the secretary, of course. Tliev bad been most fortunate in their secretary, who presented his report now without a penny of subscriptions outstanding. Mr. F. X. Fussell seconded, and the adoption was carried with acclamation.

The president said that at this juncture he must move that the club place on record its appreciation of the efforts of the secretary, and his indefatigable attention to his duties, to which the present position of the club was due. — Carried by acclamation. Sixteen new members were elected.

I In proposing that Mr. Budge be reI elected president, Mr. R. Spence' said that a good deal of the success of the club was due to its president. Much of the enjoyment of the members was undoubtedly due to the kindness of Mr. and Mrs. Umlpfo. and to Mr. Grant (vicepresident) and ill's. Grant. Mr. Spence did not believe, in making this position a rolling one. for when they had a good man , they should keep him. This was essentially a position to be filled'by a man like Mr. Budge, and so long as lie was there there would be a continuance of the amity now obtaining among members.—Mr. Stanford seconded, and the president was re-elected amidst applause. —Mr. Budge briefly returned thanks. Other officers elected were:—Vice-pre-sidents. Messrs. F. P. Uniaeke and A. F. Grant: secretary and treasurer, Mr. S. Spence; captain, Mr. R. Spence; committee. the officer* and Messrs. S. McAlister, .T. T\. L. Stanford. F. N. Fussell, Cecil Wright ; auditor, Mr. P. Skoglund.

A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. .T. R. L. Stanford for his gift of a cup. and a similar vote to Mr. Skoglund as honorary auditor. It was decided to admit country members (resident over five miles from Stratford) at half subscription; and to admit honorary members at quarter of the usual subscription. The matter of allowing ladies to play on Thursday afternoons was referred to the committee.—Mr. F..' X. Fussell said that probably there wo't'ild be men's competitions every Thursday this season. The president again offered to donate trophies for a mixed foursome, and Mr. R. 'Spence ottered a trophy for opening day.—Mr. J. \Y. Crawshaw offered a guinea trophy for the ladies, to be awarded at the discretion, of the committee. Mr. Fussell promised a driver to the man making the record for the links.

Opening: dav was fixed for Thursday next, April 24. STRAY PARAGRAPHS Th e naiiu' of Mr. J. B. Richards, our energetic secretary of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, is mentioned as a likely aspirant for municipal honors. Questioned by the Xews reporter, Mr. Richards smiled. Docs silence mean consent in this case? Saturday saw a crowded Broadway. Some of the dairy factories paid out the monthly cheques, and the suppliers came in to spend them. Mr. 0. E. Jajnes is bavins a rattling time al: his big stock-reduction sale. So are the buyers.

Mr. A. TT. Herbert's string of "wanteds" in this issue should command the attention of ladies.

Mr. W. B. Fearon, secretary of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society upon receipt of information from the Department for Internal Affairs to the effect that the coming season would be open for the shooting of cock pheasants, teal, Californinn quail, grey duck, and black swan, telegraphed to the Department the request that black swan did not affect this district, and suggested that pigeons would prove an acceptable substitute. But the Department is emphatic that there shall be no pigeon-shooting this vear.

At a mod inn- n f tlio Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society executive on Friday night. Mr. ('•; Sangster presided over a verv fiiir attendance. Tt was decided to hold the annual social on the l!>th of June in the Town Hall, Stratford. A further meeting of ladies and gentlemen interested will he held on Friday next at 3 o'clock in the offices of Messrs. .Tackson Bros. Tilt? annual meeting of the Society will he held at Stratford on May 2. Mr. D. liutcliart is acting-secretary.

Mr. fi. S. Bundle, who has for the past eighteen months been a verv efficient secretary of the Stratford Druids' Lodtre. leaves this morning for-Napier. On Friday night nhout thirty of the brethren gathered to hid him farewell. A number of speeches were made in eulogy of Mr. Ruiulle's painstaking and courteous conduct of the duties of his office, and Mr. M. C. Aagaard, A.D., on behalf of the lodge, presented him with a gold watch and chain, which is to be suitably inscribed. "Auhl Lang Syne" and cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Rundle, and the gathering dispersed. The Stratford A. and TVs executive on Friday night deuided'to affiliate with the Agricultural Societies' Association, and to send a delegate to the annual conference at Wellington. Messrs. Tlann Tiros., of Hird road. Stratford, offered three sheep , for the weight-guessing competition at' the ' annual show. The .offer was accepted 'with hearty thanks. The itinerary of the judges for the dairy farm competition, the judging of which commences to-morrow, was drawn up. Mr. W. H. IT. Young kindlv offered to place his car at the disposal of the judges. When a meeting is advertised to be held at eight o'clock, one might be pardoned for supposing that it would commence at that hour. That this is not always so may be gathered from the remark made at the Stratford Coif Club meeting on Friday night that "this is

Office and Job Printing Works: Next N.Z. Loan & Mercantile Agency Co., Broadway.

the first time in the history of the club that there has been a quorum present within live minutes of eight o'clock." The worst of it is that the continuance of the late starting practice makes matters worse and worse, for "once bitten, twice shy," may fairly be written concerning men who kick their heels in impatience for half an hour whilst awaiting a quorum. The first time that a club's annual meeting starts promptly to time the public will be duly apprised of the fact. .
