MARCONI SHARES.
LLOYD GEORGE BREAKS DOWN.
INVESTMENTS RETURN £4OO A YEAR.
(Independent Cable Association.)
. London, April 2. Examined before the Select Committee that is investigating the circumstances of the Marconi contract, Mr. Llovd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said that the Master of Elibank lived with him in Downing Street for some months, and that Sir Rufus Isaacs frequently visited there. The three of them were on the closest terms of friendship, and that explained whv they bought shares in the American Marconi Company, Sir Rufus Isaacs having first assured them that the British company was not connected with the American concern.
With a trembling voice, Mr. George continued: "I am a comparatively poor mail, but my salary is substantial compared with the rate of living when I was a humble solicitor."
The tears welled from the ChanHlor's eyes, and for a moment or two he could not proceed with his evidence. Recovering himself, lie went on to say: "The position of a Cabinet Minister is nreearious, and the glorv is transient. Parties come and go, and only the judicious make provision for the* future by investments. The whole of my investments haye returned only .. in a year. I have only one house, that in Wales, for which the contract price was £2OOO. Surely a man of 50 can have one house that he might call his own."
