ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE.

Both ssatinj accommodation and standing room at the Empire Picture Palace were to the utmost on Saturday night on the occasion of the screening of the new week-end programme.. The audience greatly enjoyed the pictures, which were a capital set, full of novdty and variety. In the star picture. "The Eye of the Idol," the Clarendon Film Company have produced a 1 story that is pregnant with startling situations working out a well-connected 'and highly interesting drama that is logical and in sequence as to scenes and revelations. The story is told in wellconnected rapid-reaction and several of the situations are extremely novel and unique; the story, too, is away from J,he hacknevcd type and springs quite a 'number of surprises during its development. The kinematograph itself has < been cleverly introduced in the working out of the theme, the "Eve of the Idol" in reality being the lens of the kinematograph camera. In short "The Eye of the Idol" is a picture that should not he missed. Another notable drama was "The Derelict's Return," a Lubiii production which points a strong moral lesson. In scenic and instructive films 'this piogramme is particularly interesting with "Scenes in the Province of Mozambique," "The liapids of the River Kuina, Japan," and "An Empire Maker" depicting reminiscences of the late Right Hon. Cecil J. Rhodes, and many typical South African scenes. The usual quartette of comedy items were screened and created much laughter. The same programme will be repeated again to-night and to-morrow night.
