Judge Darling displayed indignation at Lord Alfred Douglas's behaviour. At Douglas's request portions of "Do Profundis" were read, during which Douglas left the Court. The Judge ordered him to return, and severely rebuked him. A British Museum official stated that i; De Profundis" was lodged in the Museum on condition that it remained unopened till 11)00, when the question of its publication could be considered.
