Giving evidence before the Empire Commission, Mr. Paxten, ex-president of the Chamber of Commerce, urged that the system of cheap week-end cablegrams be extended to code messages. At present the system was only used for social purposes, but if the extension was granted it would be largely taken use of by merchants. Broadly speaking, the cheapness of cables did more to benefit the community than increasing the speed of steamers. ,
