ASSESSMENT COURT.

YESTERDAY'S SITTING. The Assessment Court resumed its sittings yesterday morning, Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., presiding. 'The following cases were adjudicated upon.: — Ellen drey, part section 134, reduced toy consent from £25 to £2O. ■James McNeill, section and shop in Devon street, £135, reduced to £l2O. William Nichol, property situated Devon street, £SO, reduced to £35.

Mary Ann Bellringer, property situate corner of Devon and Eliot streets, £aa, .ralueed to £47. Susan Bett, property situate Courtenay -street, £34, reduced to £3O, XJmioji Steamship Company., reduced by consent from £240 to £l7O. 'The following reductions were made by consent of valuator without discussion.:—

G. W. Hartnell. Lemon street, reduced from £3O to £l7.

• James Conway, Courtenay street, sections 159 to 161 reduced from £4O to £3l; and sections 1483 from £2O to £2l

Robert William Edwards, reduced from £26 to £lB.

T. M. Wallatli, reduced from £6G to £3O.

R. IT. AYallatli, part G of section 33, reduced from £45 to £3O.

At this juncture Mr. A. 11. Johnstone pointed out that he had again submitted a list of Mr. Cork ill's valuations to Mr, Mills, with the idea of making a compromise, but this had been refused except in the ease of one property. Under these circumstances lie would have to ask for costs, although he was loth to do so against the borough, but in cases in which a fair re-valuation had been made by Mr. Cork ill, and upheld by flis Worship, he would have to ask for costs.

: Mr. Mills said that 47 properties were put into his hands that morning for compromise, and there was absolutely no time to go into details of these properties. Were he allowed time to go through the figures he was quite willing to consider the valuations again, with the object of compromise'. ' According to His Worship, Mr. Mills should be given time, if he was willing to compromise.

Mr. Corkill rejoined that lie was prepared to submit a further 47 properties, beyond those submitted that morning, with regard to any wf which lis was prepared :to conftult: with Mr. Mills with the object'of. effecting a compromise. Mr.'Mills sflid jt '.was not for him to pull Mr. Corkill's valuations to pieces, but for Mr. Corkill to pull his to pieces. He would, however, meet Mr. Corkill after the Court rose, and try to adjust some of the other cases.

On resuming, Mr. A. 11. Johnstone intimated that as u result of the conference Arranged between Messrs, Corkill and Mills several valuations had been arrived at by consent,.aucl that a further adjournment would enable several other properties to be dealt with in a similar manner.

Mr. Crooke then proceeded with the hearing of the cases which had not been settled at the ..coiifenencf, stating that after that he. wo.uld grant further adjournment.
