A London cablegram reports the death of Thomas Jayes, the Leicestershire cricketer, from consumption. Mr. W. Dixon, manager for the Cement - Pipe Co., Ltd., at Hastings, lias been transferred to the company's factory at Wflitara. The Hon. J. A. Millar was married at St. Paul's pro-Cathedral on Wednes« day to Mrs. W. Nathan. Sir James Carroll attended the bridegroom as best man.
'The people of Haweri\ and district intend presenting an illuminated address to Mr. F. McGuire, ex M.P., who is about to take up his residence in Auckland, to show their appreciation of his past services.
The fiev. Dr. Waddell, of Dunedin, left by. the Makura on Saturday night on a tour in America. Of late his health has not be,en good, and he does not expect to return to the Dominion for a period of from eighteen months to two years.
The Univ>rsitv Senate mot en Wednesday and decided- that the Taranaki Scholarship held by Mary Dowling he extended for a fourth year. The Orient .Steamship Company free passages were awarded to H. Kid-son, M.A., and W. Foster, M.A. The Cook prize in Mathematics was awarded to E. Q.' Kerens (Otago), and Wm. Parker was awarded the engineering traveling certificate. Mr. Henry Guthrie, a well-known shipping agent and coal merchant, of Duni'din, died very suddenly on Wednesday afternoon (states a Press Association message). He was passing Mr. John Mi.lls's yard in Rattray street, when he was caught by a severe gust of wind, and was seen to lean up against an iron, shed. He then suddenly collapsed, and two or three gentlemen ran to his assistance. lie gave one or two gasps, and expired. Deceased, who was born in 1837, lias carried on business in Dunedin since 1804. He had been receiving medical attention for some time, and death was due to heart failure.
It is rather remarkable (says the "Westminster Gazette") that the birthday of Mrs. Pankhurst is on the anuivei- . sary of the destruction of the Bastille. Her grandfather was at Waterloo, and only just escaped with his life. As a •' girl she went to school in Paris at the Ecole Normale, where she was room companion of llenri Rochefort's daughter, and became an ardent Republican, rt was in 1879 that she met Dr. Pankhurst, who had been a member of the first Woman's Suffrage Society' (fou)idcd bv ,T. S. Mill), and was married to him in the same year. She went on the executive of the Women's Suffrage Society, ntid on the committee for pushing tlie Married Women's Property Bill originally drafted by Dr. Pankhurst, which subsequently became law. She served the town in various public capacities, and after the death of her husband was appointed Registrar of Births and Deaths She founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903.
The Bcv. T. E. Roseby, of Sydney, was unanimously elected president of the Australasian Congregational Union last week. In acknowledging the honour which the delegates paid to him, Dr. Roscbv thanked the assembly for conferring upon him such an important position. He was an Australian native,, and would endeavour to be a president worthy of the honour of Congregationalists. Rev. A. J. Griffith, who has been secretary foi T the past three years, was unanimously elected secretary for another term. Dr. Roseby was born in Sydney in 1544, and received his education at the Sydney University, where he hell! successively three scholarships and took the M.A.. LL.R., and LL.D. degrees. Tie has had a distinguished career as a Congregational minister, and represented Xew South Wales at the International Congregational Conference in London in 1801. He has acted as President of the Xew South Wales Congregational Union, and grand worthy chief templar of Xew Zealand.
