John Amos, landlord of the Sun Inn, Bedlington, barricaded his house and, with a gun, resisted the service of a notice to quit. He killed his successor's wife and two policemen, and decamped.
SHOT IN A CULVERT.

A man named Amos had a dispute with Woodirons, owner of an inn, regarding stocktaking. Woodirons called in the police, and Amos shot the constable. After n tussle, he re-entered the house, llrs, Grice was heard at an upstairs window, crying "Save me!" Sergeant Barton attempted to help her, tut was killed. The woman was found dead in a cellar, ileanwlrile Amos kept a crowd of two hundred at bay, threatening to shoot at them. He escaped at the back of the house. After three hours' search he was discovered in a crlvert. He surrendered when a civilian fired down tlxe drain, slightly wounding Amos in the face.
