SHOT WITH A PEA-RIFLE.
RESULT OF BOYS' QUARREL. VICTIM SERIOUSLY INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Whangarei, Last Night. •Several boys went out beyond Parahaki towards Wareora yesterday, among them being Edward Sheehan, aged 15'/ 2 years, son of an employee at the gasworks, and George Fyli'e, aged twelve years, \vho resides with his parents at Kiripaka. Sheehan is now in the custody of the police on a serious charge, and Fyffe is an inmate of the hospital, and is so ill that his life is despaired of.
Sheehan appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with wounding Fyffe. Sergeant Moore stated that while a partv of It'ovs were playing yesterday, voung Fyffe threw something at Sheeluui, who lifted :t pea-rifle and said, "I'll put a hole through you!" Fyffe jumped behind a tree, and the other boys endeavored to take the weapon from Sheehan's hands. Fvfl'e, imagining apparently that the other had been disarmed, reappeared, and Sheehan, levelling the rilin, fired directly at him. Tir.boy fell badly injured, and the circumstances being reported to the police young Sheehan was arrested. Fvfl'e was meanwhile taken to the hospital, and his condition being very grave, his depositions were taken in the presence of the police and Sheehan. Accused was remanded.
This afternoon, the hospital authorities reported that the boy was in a very low condition.
