STRATFORD NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents). On Friday afternoon a meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Fred booch, late-stable proprietor, was held in the D.O.A.'s office. Eight creditors were present. The bankrupt's stateTin, Wed unsecur ed creditors, £3OO 4s lOd; secured creditors, £5lO 15s lOd less estimated value of securities £4OO- - £l7O, book debts £IOOO estimated to produce £4OO, leaving a surplus of £149 19s 4d. The seeiued creditors were:-Taranaki Land Building and Investment Society (Ist mortgage estimated value of' security £400) £6O, and Newton King (2nd mortgage) £450 15s lOd. Mr. R. Spence appeared for bankrupt, whose sworn statement stated that three years ago he was solvent, but since that time had gradually got into debt. He attributed his bankruptcy to the fact that during the last three years his business had decreased considerably through the number of motor cars plying f or hire in Stratford. He (bankrupt) purchased a motor car but unfortunately it was out of repair for some months, and involved him in considerable expense. He still owned the car which was included in "stock-in-trade' shown in his statement, which also included his own horse and two gigs He had been unfortunate in bis book-keepers, and accounts had been allowed to run on indefinitely, and he had been unable to collect the money owing to him. His book debts were shown at £IOOO. and estimated to produce only £4OO, a low estimate as they ought to produce considerably more. He had iost £250 worth of horses during the last 2% years through accident. A few months ago he sold his business, the proceeds "omg towards paying his indebtedness "to Mr. Newton King. Creditors commenced to press him, and numerous summonses were issued against him. On the 28th March the bailiff, afterholding his motor ear. decided to sell this bv public auction, and in fairness to his creditors he decided to file.

ft was decided to adjourn the meeting sine die to enable the creditors to have information placed before them concerning the bankrupt's recent transactions.

The l.orough Council will meet on Monday, the 14th instant.
