AMERICAN TARIFF REFORM.
THE FREE WOOL PROPOSALS. CONFERENCES WITH SENATORS. By Cable— Association—Copyright. Washington, April 4. President Wilson is conferring with the senators with reference to the tariff. Democrats in the Senate think that the reductions are too sweeping and will be likely to require modifications. President' Wilson and the senators were unable to agree. Further conferences are pending. Leading senators differ regarding the details, as to whether it will be best to submit one Bill or a aeries, but it is believed that this will be overcome. The President hopes that the measure will be introduced on Monday.
PROPOSAL FOR FREE SUGAR. - ' •-&;-!'ft'-t! Received 6, 5.5 p.m. Washington, April 5. President Wilson and the leaders of Congress have agreed to establish a low tariff rate for sugar, which will eventually he free of taxation. The new progressive Federal income tax of one to four per cent., with a flat tax of two per cent, on corporations, is to cover the loss involved by the alteration of the sugar tariff.
