Morton, of the Massaebnssetts Stale Psvchopathic Hospital. One of the professors attached to Harvard University, who desires his name withheld because he wishes to avoid publicity, was the subject on which the experiments were conducted. He was engaged in arduous menta'
work some time ago, ami was reduced to such a state of insomnia that he feared lie would become insane.
A scientifically perfect chair was constructed especially for his benefit, and this chair permitted "as complete relaxation as a gallon of treacle on a marble slab."
The.subject of the experiment, while seated in the chair, obtained full rest in half the time required for resting on a mattress. He retained full consciousness, and when he left the chair, all bodily vigour was restored. The unnamed professor has been living this strange life for a number of years, never finding It necessary to close his eyes. Dr. Horton calls it the "recovery of a lost instinct." It is also described as a "twilight state." Professor Munsterburg, in vouching for the truth of the story, says there is nothing in it which cannot be explained scientifically..
