BOWLING.

Thursday saw the final match for the banner in the northern division, New Plymouth, smarting under their defeat at the hands of West End last week, turning the tables on their opponents and beating thein on neutral ground by the narrow margin of seven points. This leaves the final for the banner to be played off' between New Plymouth and the championship team in the southern division. It is questionable, however, whether it will be reached before the season closes. Hawera and Piliama are level with each other, while Patea has to play-off with Manaia. The match takes place next Wednesday and in event of Patea proving victorious three teams will have tied for the premiership of the south. In that case a succession of fine weather will be the only means of ensuring that the final between north and south will eventuate this season. There is a move to play a match on the Fitzroy green next Thursday between the bowling fraternity of the New Plymouth Social Club and' the rest of the bowlers of New Plymouth. The West End green will close down next Thursday, and the Fitzroy green two weeks hence, while the New Plymouth Club's green will remain open until the end of the month.

In the fourth round for the New Plymouth Club's championship cup H. Smart beat Govett and A. K, Smart defeated Grey. The final thus rests between the brothers Smart. Last year the same two tried howlers met in the final, Allan carrying off the honors. If he is successful this year, the cup—which has to be won twice in succession will become his property.

In the handicap singles J. C. Morey (receive 7] beat A. K. Smart. Fraser (receive 0} has to play H. Smart, and the winner of this contest will play Morey in the final.

The final for the handicap pairs will see .Marks and Lnscombe ■ (receive 3) matched against Blnndell and Go)dw,ater, This is what a correspondent of the "Bulletin" thinks of our game.-—One dav 1-itplv T picked un mv daily paper and glimpsed at the stirring: headlines—- '' The Last Shot: A Desperate Struggle." With a grateful sigh of thanks T settled down and prepared to read about a wounded policeman and a dead burglar. I discovered instead that the whole beautiful column was about a name of giant marbles, or bowls, played bv men who have lost the spring of their tennis da vs. Seems to me the dailv Press is too feverish these times. Tt has, or it pretends to have,- an tinlimited capacity- for excitement; the sporting specialists are allowed to rave as long as they like; and the most sedentary pastime is written up as if it were a cross between a bull-fight and an eruption. There is surely .something idiotic in .'escribing a noiseless game of giant marbles :is "?. desperate struggle" or "a fight to a finish."—phrases that sugeest kicking and throttling, and pools of blood and corpses in heaps. Anv writer who applies hot and rebellious language to the slow green killtime scorns to me to be working on the wrong lines. Tt demands rather a grave, devotional stvle and plenty of rounded periods. Of course, T don't form the rink devotions, and for all T know it may be a perfect furnace of excitement. All T can say it is has not got any of the usual symptoms.
