At a meeting of the Waiiganui branch of the W.C.T.U.. the resolution passed by the Convention of Unions at Nelson against the New South Wales system of Bible-reading in schools, was discussed. The Waiiganui W.O.T.U. strondy dissented from the action of the delegates, and passed, practically unanimously, a resolution declining to endorse the position taken up by" the Convention and expressing approval of the platform of thi! A public meeting to-night supported a proposal to have a llnwke's Bay court at the Auckland Exhibition, and an executive committee was appointed to get into touch with the various towns in the district and with the manufacturers likely to be interested. At the Education Board meeting today, .Inspector Henry drew attention to the practice of mutton birders taking their children with them to the mutton hireling islands, thus withdrawing them from school during two months 'of the year. The result was that attendances at some, schools near the coast were seriouslv reduced and the grading of schools had to be reduced. Mr. Henry suggested that the children should be left" with friends and board paid at the rate of 2s fid per child. The Education Board declined to allow three teachers leave to attend the' annual military training camp, and passed a resolution requesting the Government that the compulsory attendance of teachers at military 'parades during school hours should not have been forced without, consulting the Education Board in the first instance in order to prevent the closing and disorganisation of schools.
