ATHLETICS.

FRANKLEY ROAD SPORTS. The weather yesterday was more suit: able for footbail than for ail athletic sports gathering, as there was a very eold wind, with occasional sharp showers. This, of course, militated against .the .attendance at the Frankley Road Sports, still the committee have cause to be satisfied with the number that did patronise them. The running and cycling events tilled well, and caused keen competition. The two long distance events went to a young runner named McCaul, who shows good promise. Croziei', Hughes and Deans took the balance of the running events. The hitter's prize money was impounded, pending investigation of 1113 performances. The cycling events fell to May and Cross after good contests. The .handicappers, Messrs. Tippins, Clarke, and Mel,eod, can congratulate themselves 011 their gauging of the contestants' abilities. The sheep-guessing and chain-stepping should add many 'shekels to the committee's funds. The various officials worked lu'.rd and got the events oil' in good time. Mr. A. C. Downes again had all the secretarial work up to the minute, getting through without any bustle at all. The other officials who were responsible for the successful conduct were the judges, Messrs. Jury, Kngle field and A. Lister, the starter, Mr. C. Lister, anil Messrs. Cross, Cioxier, Saddler, Tippins, Hamilton and Okey. The afternoon tea-room, under the care of Mr. Reale, did great business. The sheen weighed over IfiOlbs, anil as this was the limit that the steelyards would register, it was decided to weigh the sheep in the presence of a committee at.Webster Bros.' Auction Mart on Saturday afternoon. A successful dance was held in the gymnasium in the evening. MAKETAWA SPORTS. Rain somewhat marred the Maketawa fourth annual picnic and sports yesterday in Mr. A. Marshall's picturesque grounds. Showers fell intermittently throughout the whole day, but nevertheless several hundred persons were in attendance. Luncheon anil afternoon tea were served in a big marquee, and the fare, which was dispensed by Mies. .Johnston and a band of willing assistants, was of the best. There was, in fact, on all sides abundant evidence of country hospitality, and the rain tried in vain to damp the .spirits of those present. Most of the events produced good fields, and the close finishes spoke well for the handicapping, which was in the capable bands of Messrs. R. Thomas and W. Brown. The children were especially well served, and for them there were flat races without number. Everything went off without a hitch, the general arrangements, thanks largely to the indefatigable efforts of the honorary secretary (Mr. T. E. Taylor), being highly creditable. Messrs. J. Brown, W. Corney and A. Marshall gave everv satisfaction as judges, and Mr. -Toe. Simpson and his bell were very much in evidence. The Inglew ood Brass BfMiri was in attendance the whole day and. under Bandmaster Cottier, contributed a well-diversified programme of music. All things considered, fine weather was the only thing wanting to make the gathering an outstanding success. The inevitable sheepguessing competition was Avon by Mr. .T. Hall, who guessed the correct weight, 158V 2 1b. s The sports events resulted as follows: Shareholders' Handicap. lOOvds.—W. Wheeler, scr., and J. Dombroski, 14yds., dead beat, 1.
