CHILD IN A DRAWER.
YOUXG woman: arrested. Wellington, Wednesday. The finding of the body of a female child in a drawer in a bedroom at fhe Hotel Windsor on March last formed the subject of an inquest conducted by Dr. Arthur, S.M., coroner, yes-, terday.
. ~ief-Detcetive Broberg conducted the ;> .. eedings for the police.
Evidence was given by Dr. FyfFe that !i • hold a post-mortem on the body at tii. morgue on March 18. The child was. fully developed, newly born, and the body was wrapped in two aprons, some clothing, a sheet, and a towel. On the towel was the name ''Windsor," and 011 one of the aprons the name "Berry." There was no external marks of violence. From thp condition of the lungs it was certain that the child, which was diseased, had breathed. There was nothing to show by what means the child had lost its life, except that the congested condition of the brain might have been caused by suffocation during the time of birth, or directly afterwards. After evidence had been called as to the finding of the body by a waitress when looking for a needle, the coroner returned a verdict that the cause of death was suffocation, either during or immediately after birth, but how it"was brought about could not be said. Subscquentlv to the inquest proceedings, Martha Berry, a young woman, was charged with intending to conceal the fact that the child was born. On Chief-Detective Broberc's application. she was remanded until April <l. The accused has to stay at the Salvation Army Home until that date.
