SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS.
GENERAL HERTZOG'S POSITION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Capetown, December 20. General Hertzog, interviewed, stated that he challenged the Cabinet to disagree with the principle of his declaration, which was that where South African and Imperial interests conflicted, South African came first. None disagreed and some of his colleagues desired him to write to General Botha regretting his utterances and undertaking not to repeat them, but he had not the slightest regret, and would never write a letter to General Botha which would cause him to lose his self-respect.
GENERAL BOTHA'S CABINET. Capetown, December 20. Mr. Fischer has announced that he will remain in General Botha's Cabinet. CABINET CHANGES. Received 22, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, December 20. The only Cabinet changes are that Mr. Sauer succeeds General Hertzog, and Sir Thomas Watt succeeds Mr. Graaf, whilst the latter takes Mr. Gubbin's port folio. General Botha resents General Hertzog's disclosing Cabinet proceedings. He states that General Hertzog unnecessarily asked whether South African interests have preference over the Imperial interests. The true interests of South African need not conflict. It is unpardonable for General Hertzog to suggest that the Empire was only good so long as it was useful to South Africa.
