SWEET PEA SHOW. Palmerston N., Friday. The New Zealand Sweet Pea Show opened to-day, with a good display. G. C. Holder (Porirua) wins ithe. Graphic trophy and the Palmerston trophy, valued at 20 guineas each, and the Sydenham trophy, valued at 5 guineas. Mrs. T. C. Williams (Palmerston) wins the New Zealand championship cup of 3ft. guineas, and -Miss McLennan (Palmerston) the Catos trophy of 10 guineas. THE DEFENCE ACT. Dunedin, Friday. Mr. Bartholomew, S.M., decided today that the defence authorities had no power to fine, territorials for failing to attend drill. Fines were only possible to l)i: levied by the authorities when the person under military discipline! is in a military camp or parade. ,
