CRICKET.
At its annual meeting on Friday last, the Hawera Cricket Club resolved to communicate with the Sports Protection League urging on it to support any movement in the direction of obtaining a universal half-holiday. The club decided to open the season on the 28th inst., and to enter two teams for the cup eontest, if the membership warranted it. Exception is taken by a. prominent oricketer to the remarks passed by Mr. J. Clarke to the effect fcliat the Club* contribute practically no irevenue to the upkeep of the sports ground. The cricketer pointed out to a News representative that although they only paid a nominal rent to the Sports Ground Committee they expended each year a considerable sum in putting it into order. The committee, on the other hand, spent practically nothing on the ground. He added that but for the fact that the. cricketers went to such trouble and expense in the summer months the ground would be unfit for cricket, football, or any other form of sport. As it was, the cricketers kept the ground in order in the summer, but in the winter not a hand's turn -was done on it. It was, he urged, the duty of the Sports- Ground Committee to hand the ground over to the cricketers in the tamo condition as when that body received it at the beginning of the football season.
The annual meeting of the Oarrington Road Cricket Club will be held in the secretary's office this evening.
