THE NEWCASTLE MINERS. Newcastle, July 1". Another hatch of men have given notice to discontinue work in various collieries. It is tolerably certain that the wheelers and surface hands in the Newcastle district have determined to cease work in preference to allowing the case to he decided by the Collieries' Conciliation Committee. It is probable that nine collieries will be involved. ORGANISED LABOR. Sydney, July 13. The secretary of the Labor Council, in •his half-yearly report, notes the general inclination of organised labor for closer unity. The time, he says, is opportune to meet this before a rival organisation comes to split the ranks to the detriment of the workers and in the interests of the other side. Referring to strikes, he says that the scientific strike is the only strike that can prove successful. It requires a welldisciplined body of unionists, wisely managed, ably controlled, and directed only where it is necessary to hit the enemy, and to hit its hardest.
