Hardwiek won his hect in the 400 metres, swimming the distance in smin. 3C9CC, Champion, taking a second longer, leing second. Tartakover did not finish in the fourth heat. Misses Durack and Wylie won the semi-finals in the ladies' 100 metres in Imin. 20 1-osec, and lmin. 27 4-asec. respectively. The Australian crew is practising satisfactorily on the course. AMERICAN AND BRITISFI IDEALS. London. July 11. The Pall Mall Gazette, referring to the American successes at the Olympic games, points out that America aims at producing specialists, and Britain allround men. It says: ''One C. B. Fry is worth more than a score of semiprofessional specialists." THE BRITISH IMPEACHED. AMERICAN VICTORIES. Received 12, 10.15 p.m. London, July 12. •Mr. Thomas, ex-president of the Oxford University Athletic Club, writing in the Daily Mail, caustically criticises the British team at Stockholm. The other nations, except Britain, he savs, regard the Olympic games seriously. The Americans have won unprecedented and remarkable victories by their determination and sheer merit. England's incompetence is largely due to lack of organisation. Stockholm, July 12. . The Americans again predominate today in most of the preliminary rounds. Moulding (Canada) won the 10,000 metres walk in lhr. Tmin. 58 2-ssee. Italy won the gymnastic display, Britain being third. Longworth's illness is not dangerous, and he is recovering.
