CAUSE OF THE DISASTER. By Cable—Press London, July 1. At the Titanic enquiry the AttorneyGeneral said that the evidence showed that the vessel was punctured to a depth of 42 inches by an ice spur. The hearing was adjourned till Wednesday. DEFENDING THE BOARD OF TRADE. Received 2, 11.15 p.m. London, July 2. At the Titanic enquiry Sir Rufus Isaacs said that if Symon, who was in charge of the Duff-Gordons' boat, had returned he would have had to stay. There was no explanation except that he was afraid' of being swamped. He defended the Board of Trade for not requiring an increase of boats for vessels of over 10,000 tons, on the ground that it was more important to provide a sufficiency of watertight compartments than complete boat accommodation.
