A very old settler in the person of Mr. Adolphus Kyngdon died in New Plymouth last evening, aged 78 years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. A. E. Watkins, ( of this town. The death is announced of Mr.. John F. Herbert, of Tapanui, aged 84. Deceased was a run-holder at Andmore. and was in Victoria in the early days, and at Gabriel's Gully in 1861.
Henere Te Atua, a highly influential chief in the Porangahau district, passed away on Friday morning after a very short illness. His death has cast a gloom oil the surrounding community, where he was so well-known. His age was about 60.
The Government has appointed the following gentlemen to act as a Royal Commission on education: Messrs. Mark Cohen and W. Davidson (Dunedin), J. R. Kirk (Gisborne), F. Pirani (Feilding). Hugh Poland, M.P. (Paeroa), John O. Thomson, M.P. (Riverton), and Thos. H. Wells (Auckland).
A cable message has been received by the Congregational Union of New Zea« land, from Dr. Berfond Hooke, secretary of the Congregational Society, London, stating that the Rev. John Williams Ashford, of Abergavenney, Monmouth, has accepted the pastorate, of the St. Clair Congregational Church, Dunedin.
Mr. Moore, first assistant at th,e Waitara Public School, ,has forwarded 1 hid resignation to the Education Board, having accepted an appointment under th* North Canterbury Education Board, at the "Richmond School. Miss Smith, assistant at the Mahoe Stehool, has also rescued from the service of the Taranaki Education Board.
The Right Hon. James Bryee, Britisk Ambassador at Washington, who arrive# at Auckland by the Talune on Thursday next, on the voyage of the Manuka from San Francisco to Papeete expressed tois intention of spending some time in New Zoaland. studying the country's democratic legislation and viewing its scenk charms. Mr. 'Bryce, who is at present engaged on another k work on "Demo"cracy," is accompanied by Mrs. Bryce. The distinguished visitors will be tht guests of Lord and Lady Islington during their stay in the Dominion. From New Zealand Mr. Bryce proposes to visit th« principal cities of Australia, and returns to the United States by the Vancouver route, via Auckland.
The Dunedin Star understands that Mr. G. D. Ross has been promoted t* the head office «f the Union Company at Sydney. His removal will be a heavr loss to local military circle®, and especially to the engineering branch of the Territorials, of whom he has been th« leading spirit for many years. The Sydney Telegraph mentions the following further changes in the TJnion Company'* staff:—Mr. P. W. Humphries, traffic manager at Sydney, has been promoted branch manager of the company at Oamaru. Mr. Digby Smith, of the Oamaru staff, will succeed Mr. Humphries as traffic manager. Mr. C. Byng. the chief of the passenger department at Sydney, replaces Mr. Ross at Dunedin.
