ATHLETICS.

EGMONT ROAD SPORTS. The sports meeting to be held in Mr. Sampson's paddock, Egmont road, on Thursday, is the most talked of event in local athletic circles to-day. Competitors and spectators know from past experience that the committee is most enthusiastic and energetic in its efforts to make time pass pleasantly for the visitors, and their efforts are usually successful. Quite a number of handsome trophies have been donated towards the prize fund, and: given fine weather a record gathering is anticipated. Messrs. 11. Okey, M.P., and J. S. Connett, chairman of the Bell Block Dairy Company, have kindly consented to act as judges, whilst Messrs. L. B. Webster and J. Bennett will officiate as starter and timekeeper respectively. In the evening a concert and dance will fittingly terminate the great day, and to the former some of New Plymouth's leading vocalists will contribute. Good music has been engaged for the dance, and with a perfect floor what more could devotees to the shrine of Terpsichore ask, except, perhaps, dainty refresh.ments at the interval, and as the catering is in the hands of Mr. P. Lealand this is assured. The local ,poet overheard a conversation in New Plymouth on Saturday, (which caused him to burst forth into poetry—this, even though it is long past the vernal spring, when the disease is said to be at its worst:— I say! Where are you going on Thursday, Jack? Oh! I'm going to Egmont Road and back. Sports in the day, good concert and dance at night. The 'bus is going out, so I can get back all right. You say it's next Thursday. I will go with, you; I'll mention "it to my mates, and they will go to. I remember being out there once before, And had a good time; so will go once more.
