SIR JAMES CARROLL
SOCIAL AT GISBORNE, By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. Sir James Carroll, in the presence of a packed audience, was presented tonight with a handsome illuminated address and other very valuable tokens for himself and Lady Carroll in recognition of his long and valued services as member for the district and a Minister of the Crown. Visitors were present from all parts of the Dominion, including the Prime Minister, Hon. W. D. S. MaeDonald, Mr. Dillon (ex-M.P. fpr Hawke's Bay), Mr. F. Lawry (ex-MfP. for Tnuranga), all of whom" delivered complimentary speeches, the prevailing note being congratulations to Sir James Carrol! on his efficient sen-ices and a hope that he would again be called upon to work in the interests of the country as a whole.
Mr. Mackenzie was enthusiastically received. He said that the night would be memorable in the history of the country. Leading representatives of both races—the Maori and the pakeha—had met together for a common object, .to pay a high tribute to a distinguished man, who combined in his veins the blood of the two races. He had always retained an unbroken friendship for Sir James Carroll. Mr. Mackenzie paid a tribute" to Sir James Carroll's public life, laying particular stress on the success which attended his administration when Acting-Prime Minister. He was the orator of the House, and, in his opinion, the ablest man who ever sat in Parliament. (Applause.) Mr. Mackenzie referred at some length to the prosperity of the country, and spoke of the public debt largely on the lines of his speeches in the south. He was confident of the Dominion's assured advance, given good and vigorous administration, and they would endeavor to provide that. Sir James Carroll, in a poetical speech, returned thanks, and dwelt at length on idealistic politics. He expressed his intention of ever supporting the Liberal party as long as the party system attained. He must support the same party, and he had always honored the Liberal flag, and he always would do so.
