DISTRICT NEWS

i EGMONT VILLAGE. | (From Our Own Correspondent.) J Wednesday witnessed the departure' 1 of the Village and other companies of Territorials for the encampment at Hawera. Let us hope the training will be the means of straightening them up and making them look soldier-like. Fathers, mothers, and sweethearts were there, bidding good-bye to their dear ones, reminding one of the departure of troops for South Africa instead of an encampment a few miles away. There is no doubt the farmer's son will enjoy the outing, being as it is a slight change from the ordinary routine of stumping, ploughing, etc. At the school concert to be held shortly a splendid farce will be staged. The performers are old hands at the game, and' judging by the rehearsals the°farce j promises to be one of the best ever staged in the hall. During the last week or two farmers around this district have been taking advantage of the fine weather, the sowing of oats and grass seed, etc., being almost completed. The output from the Mangorei dairy factory is considerably more than last year, the abundance of grass and favorable weather conditions being mainly re- j sponsible. The price realised for April butter is Is Id. I regret to learn that Mr. J. 1 O'Shaughnessy, x>f this district, has been seriously indisposed, but he is now progressing favorably. I am sure his many friends will be pleased to see him about again soon. Mr. L. Olson met with a painful accident the other day whilst unloading timber at the Sash aud Door Company's yard in New Plymouth, a piece of timber failing and striking him just below the knee, inflicting a wound about six inches long. The recent heavy rains at Easter time, combined with the heavy traffic, have been the means of cutting up the Egmont road, and motor-cars, which fly along at about 40 miles an hour, will need, to travel considerable .slower, or come to grief. The confirmation classes conducted bv the Rev. Houchen are being rather poorly attended. The rev. gentleman wishes those persons who have already been confirmed to attend the service next Friday, from 7 to S o'clock. r:
