ÆRIAL NAVIGATION.

DAILY MAIL PRIZE. WON BY BEAUMONT. By CaWe.—'Press Association.—Copyright London, July 20. Beaumont and Vedrines had a splendid race throughout the day, and were seldom far apart. Both arrived at the various stopping places dazed and half numb. They were driven out of their courses by torrential ram storms and violent gusty winds. Vedrines lost fifty minutes owing to losing his way, having to descend three times to enquire his whereabouts. Beaumont raced and easily beat the Scotch express crossing Shap Fell, near Carlisle. It is possible Beaumont and Vedrines will finish the race this afternoon. 1 Later. Vedrines and Beaumont left Bristol within a couple of minutes of each other. There was a terrific contest for the leadership. They touched at Exeter and Salisbury Plains. Vedrines reoovered j eighteen minutes on the run to Brighton. The last stage to Brooklands was safely negotiated. Beaumont completed the circuit in 22 hours 28 minutes, and Vedrines took seventy minutes longer. VEDRTNE'S SEVERE HANDICAP. Received 28. 12.5 n.w. London, July 27. Beaumont rode a Bleriot monoplane, and Vedrines rode a Borelmorane monoplane. Neither replaced any of the marked parts of their aeroplanes during the flight. Vedrine's was the quicker flyer, but his mistakes cost him the prize. His ignorance of the English language was a severe handicap. He revived a consolation of £2OO. Beaumont's experience as a naval officer made navigation by compass and map easy while he was able to see the earth. He states that exploding bombs showing a white smoke are the best signals for anding places. Valentine reached Carlisle. Hamel's icroplane was damaged at Dumfrieshire Mid Cody's at Newcastle.
