PIANO-PLAYING MANIA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. k Auckland, Monday. Edward Travis completed 86 hours 20 minutes continuous piano playing at the Federal Hall on Saturday night, doing twenty minutes over the original programme to exceed Stirton's performance at Invereargill.
A SMART ARREST. Hamilton, Monday. A smart arrest was made by the solice here this morning. A young man lamed Christie, who escaped from custody by leaping off the train near Inrcrcargill some time ago, was arrested in a toy shop. When searched he had in his possession a loaded revolver, also part of what are alleged to be the proceeds of a series of burglaries committed here. LICENSING OFFENCES. Gisborne, Monday. At the Police Court, as the result of a raid made recently by the police at a Maori settlement, 'John Callaghan, a ccaehman, was fined £2 for having supplied liquor to a native. Defendant had brought out beer from town for a native named Swan, who was also charged with having introduced liquor into a Maori kaianga, and lined £5. A JUDGMENT UPHELD. I Wanganui, Monday. 'Mr. Justice Edwards' reserved judgment was given this morning in the appeal of John Hayes against the decision of Mr. Kerr, S.M., Wanganui, that the game of "Hoopla," played with a glass table and rings, was a game of chance. His Honor upheld the judgment, with costs .€lO 10s. . . THE HUGH WARD COMPANY. Wellington, Saturday. The Hugh Ward Comedy Company has been taken over by Mr. Reginald \Vykeham and Mr. W. A. Low, who have been associated with Mr. Ward for some years, as stage manager and treasurer respectively. Mr. Ward finishes with the company in Invereargill. and Miss Palotta passed through Wellington to-day en route for Vienna. Her plans for the future depend upon the health of her mother. PROSPECTS OF GOLD N'EAR WHANGAREI. Whangarei, Saturday. On several occasions prospects of gold have been obtained in the Wha.igarci district. The latest find is in the vicinity of Mangapn, where, at a spot kiio\rn as Jimmy's Point,' Mr. E. Carter has secured prospects that on analysis Tcturn fnlwt 7«r. to the ton. Tt is stated that the stone was not; picked, and was taken from the casing of a reef. Mr. Carter is forwarding to the Government Laboratory further samples of the stone for analysis, and the result is being awaited with interest.
