THE STRIKE IN JOHANNESBURG By cable—Press Association.—Copyright Johannesburg, May 14. The streets are patrolled and barricades erected at danger points. The tramsheds have been converted into a camp and military are ready to reinforce the police. Public opinion is against the. strikers, owing to the inconvenience caused. Glynn, who was arrested and admitted to bail, headed the strikers in attempting to rush the power station. A stoppage of the current would have plunged the streets, shops and houses into darkness, in addition to stopping the trams. Mounted police are dispersed throughout the town. The prisons being full, others arrested are taken to the fort. Many police were on duty for 36 hours. AN ATTEMPT FRUSTRATED TO BLOW UP TRAMS. Received 15, 11.45 p.m. Johannesburg, May 15. The rioters attempted to stop the trams in Market Square. The police charged with batons, injuring several. Two sticks of blasting gelatine and a detonator were discovered in a groove in a rail. They were removed before the oncoming tram passed.
