OMATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of ratepayer? of the Omata riding of the County .Council was held at the Omata,Hall on Friday evening, when llf. McAllum, the member of the riding, gave an account of his stewardship for the past year, and outlined the policy be intended to follow for the future. Mr. E. R.Bayley was voted to the chair. Mr. McAllum went very 'fully into details, and at the close of his address, a unanimous vote 'of confidence was passed, and' it was the express wish of the meeting that Mr. McAllum should' allow himself to be nominated at the general election, which will be held in November next. ■
Ono of the subjects dealt with at the meeting was the Ptniho toil-gate, and theft is no question but that the Omata riding as now constituted is entitled to a share of the proceeds. "Why was the toll-gate put on?" was asked by one of those present. "To recoup the council for the money spent on the Oakura and Tapuae contracts," was Mr. McAllum's reply. Me. MeAlluin 'was in favor ot increasing the chairman's honorarium, although when h-e first went into the council he was against it, but having seen the thne devoted to the work ot the council by the ehairman, he considered him fully entitled to at least £IOO a year.-
Speaking personally, I think Mr. Mc- a Allum is the right man in the right t place, and it is evident from the facts a and figures submitted to the meeting o that he must have devoted a large 0 amount of time and taken much trouble a to eollect the information. A vote of a thanks to the chair brought the meeting to a close. J q n RAHOTU. t • -- v (From Our Own Correspondent). s For months past the members of the t Anglican Church here, assisted by mem- a bers of other denominations, have been ' working hard arranging for a bazaar in aid of the church building fund. The c bazaar eventuated lust week, and proved ] a great financial success. It took the ' form of an "Olde English Fayre," and ( the eight stalls were arranged accord- ' ingly. The stall-holders and assistants ' were all dressed in keeping with the ' scheme. On the opening day (Wednes- I day) the weather was very wet. and the attendance suffered. Nevertheless, ' good business was done, over £SO being ! taken. The bazaar was formally opened ; by Mr. Dive, M.P. for the district, and ' a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him, <m the motion of Mr. W. Gray, seconded by Mr. Hughes. On Thursday evening the weather was good, =o was the attendance, and business was very I brisk. A number of the dearer articles were given as prizes for shooting competitions. Each evening a quantity'of goods was auctioned, Mr. T. WHlcotf wielding the hammer very ably. On the evening of the second day two eon- ' certs were hold, and proved most enjoyable. Some good items were given by performers from Opunake and elsewhere. A maypole dance, the evolutions of which were gracefully performed by numerous children coached In Mrs. Campbell and Miss Lewis, was much adI mireil. as was the Spaui-h tambourine dance by four Pimgareliii children under the t nil ion of Mrs. Harrison. The accompaniments were played by Miss Martin (piano) nnil Mr. Von T.nlilie (violin) for the maypole dance, and by Mrs. Harrison for the tambourine dance. Mr. Von l.nblie was present on both days, and materially assisted with the musical programme. The refreshment tallies, which were laid on the stage, were in great demand, the attendants being kept very busy. Tn all, £l2O was taken, and there are still numerous articles to be 1 disposed of. The Rev. Addenbrooke has worked extremely hard, and the result will be vety 'gratifying to ltiiu.
