OPERATIC SOCIETY
AXXTAL MEETIXG. T)ie first annual meeting of the New Plymouth Operatic Society was Held last evening. About lifty attended. Mr. J. S. S. Medley occupied the chair. The chairman's report was read. It was .stated that the performances of "Dorothy" were very successful. The thanks of the society were due to Mr. Francis Cornwall, the conductor, who, by dint of hard work, brought the choruses to such a high standard. Also to Mr. T. Southall, who, as itage manager, had such hard work; mid to Miss Warren, the pianist, who put in a lot of time for the benefit of the society. The committee were able to report a small credit-balance as the result of theseveral performances, and the society had as assets the scenery and dresses used in the production (which have been valued at the sum of £35). These cost the society a good deal more, The committee also reported that bonuses had' been awarded as follows: To Mr. Francis Cornwall (the conductor), £10; to Miss Warren (the pianist), £5; to Mr. Brooks (in charge of the stage), £5. The balance-sheet showed that during the year receipts to the amount of £274 12s 8d were received. Kxpenditureamounted to £209 12s Id, leaving: a eash balance in the bank of £5 0s 7d. Oflicers for the year were appointed as under:—Patron, His Worship the Mayor. (Mr. G. Tisch); president; Mr. H. ./. H. Okey, MJ\; vice-presidents, Messrs. ■I. H. Quillium. H. Weston, R. Cock, Hon. 0. Samuel and Dr. Leatham; secretaries, Messrs. Bert McEweu and N. Parker; treasurer, Mr. J. 8. S. Medley; conductor,. Mr. R. N. Renaud; stage manager, Mr. 11. Brooks; assistant-stage manager, Mr. E. L. Bayley; pianiste, Miss Warren; management committee, Miss Ethel Buekmann. Mrs. Dell, Mis» B. Clarke, Mcssr.s. Colter, E. ClarkeVL. Cock, F. J. O'Grady; property manager, Mr. f}. Treeby. Seventeen new members were proposed* for election. Subscriptions for the year were fixed at 7s Od for gents, and 3s Gd for ladies. The matter of selecting an opera for the coming season was left to the committee. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded* to the outgoing secretary, to whose efforts the society owned much of its sucecs=.' Resolved, that a letter of condolence he sent to Mr. and Mrs. MoAllum in their recent bereavement. At a subsequent meeting of committee Mr, J. S. S. Medley was appointed chairman. It was decided to'discuss the matter of choosing nn opera at next meeting of the 'committee.
