INGLEWOOD NEWS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent). The usual monthly meeting of the Higlewood Borough Council took plane on Wednesday evening, when his Worship presided over a full attendance. The following correspondence was dealt with:From Municipal Association's solicitor, stating that the boroughs of Inglcwoocl and Waitara could not combine to form a lire district. From Mr. J. B. Hine, M.l'., arranging a I meeting with the Domain Board for Saturday. From the Valuer-General, advising tha't certain necessary re-valuations would be made. A petition was read from a majority of the Inglewood tradesmen asking that some steps be taken to minimise the dust nuisance. Three suggestions were placed before the council —(1) To procure a water-cart; (2) to erect stand pipes round the main street; (I!) to procure a ball hydrant such'as is used, in many of the larger towns. It was pointed out that a water-cart would ■ cost between £4O and £6O, and that the cost of upkeep would be too great in proportion to the work required. Stand-pipes would only be useful for the streets in which they were erected, whereas a ball-hydrant should not cost more than £o', and would be effective anywhere in the town. The councillors all agreed that the dust nuisance was a cause of heavy loss, and that something should be done at once. It was resolved that prices be procured and a ball-socket bvdrant obtained.

The report of the committee appointed to meet delegates from the Taranaki County Council in the matter of contributions to bridges was received in committee.

The matter of charging fees for the interment of stillborn children was left to be reported on at the intermediate meeting. The amount of £3 13s 3d, bad and disputed accounts, was written off the Council's books.

It was resolved to hold the next meeting of the Council on the 4th, instead of the sth prox. The Works Committee made the following recommendations-—That the present turncock be re-appointed for one year; that the two surfacemen be reappointed for one year at the same wage; that the east side of Richmondstreet be kerbed, and that the watertables be filled up and gravelled; that a level crossing be made in Matai-street near the police station; that the asphalt footpaths be tarred and sanded, and that the work of asphalting the footpaths in front of Messrs Curtis' and Winfield's 7icw buildings be proceeded with; that Cutfield-street between Kelly and Rata-street corners be put in order. Cr. Fawcett objected to the recommendations to re-appoint the borough turncock and surfacemen, holding that the right of appointment belonged to the new Council, and moved that the staff should be engaged by the incoming Council. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder, and the recommendations| were adopted, Cr. Faweett dissenting. After a very long discussion, it was moved that a horse and cart be procured for the use of the Council. This motion was declared lost by four votes to l three. j It was decided to call tenders for sundry carting for the ensuing twelve months. It was resolved that the scheme formulated by the borough turncock for liltration of water and painting of wood and ironwork at the in-take be adopted. The Reserves Committee's, overseer's and treasurer's reports were adopted. Accounts amounting to £181) 2s 5d were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
